Preventative Dentistry - Sealants

Why seal teeth?

While regular brushing and flossing removes food and bacteria from the smooth surfaces of the teeth, it can be difficult to properly clean the pits and fissures or "grooves" on the teeth. These grooves are particularly evident on the back teeth or 'molars'. The bristles of a toothbrush can't fit into these microscopic fissures so, unless prevented, food particles containing sugars and starches remain in these grooves causing decay and ultimately, a filling. Sealants do just that; seal out food particles and sugars to help prevent decay. Children and teens are excellent candidates for sealants because the likelihood of developing tooth decay on the chewing surfaces begins early in life.

What are sealants?

The sealant itself is a tooth colored material that is bonded to the chewing surface of the teeth. Before the sealant is placed, the teeth are cleaned thoroughly and conditioned. Once the sealant is placed a curing light is used to harden the material. Sealants can be applied quickly and painlessly with no anesthetic and no restrictions afterward; except to continue brushing and flossing after every meal!
